I wanted to take the time to say THANK YOU for all of your support and for an incredible year. I also wanted to share some year end updates and news about what is coming up in 2019.
After winning my Primary in September, I spent fall phone banking and canvassing for other Democratic candidates. Since the 2016 Presidential Election, with the Four Freedoms Democratic Club and activists on the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island, we provided grassroots support for 17 Democratic campaigns in the area, with all but one seat flipping from red to blue. We removed renegade Democrats from and gained Democratic control of the New York State Senate, and we took back Congress. We also saw historic turnouts, which shows that people believe that we have the power to make change at the ballot box.
Within the Democratic Party, we are beginning to see change, too. The New York County Democratic Committee met in October to vote on rules reforms that we had been working on for over a year with 25 reforms passing unanimously. Though we were unable to vote on the lobbyist ban, these reforms are a big step forward in making our Party more transparent, accountable, and inclusive.
As your State Committeewoman, these are the kinds of reforms I am working to bring to the State Party. In response to leadership’s unfavorable actions at the Fall Meeting, I and 42 other Members signed and sent a letter to leadership expressing our concerns and demanding change by the Spring 2019 meeting. You may read the full letter HERE.
At the Spring meeting, we plan to reintroduce the progressive resolutions that leadership blocked from discussion and vote in October. I will also be working to build support to incorporate my proposed amendments surrounding campaign and finance rules reform, and ultimately a broader reform, of the State Party’s rules.
Additionally, last Friday State Democratic Party Executive Director Geoff Berman announced that he is resigning. State Committee Members have not been informed of the next steps with leadership, but as soon as that is announced, I will be sure to share it with you.
And finally, looking into 2019, we have several upcoming elections. With the election of Tish James as New York State Attorney General, we will be having a special election in mid-February to fill her seat as New York City Public Advocate. The election will be called and petitioning will begin in early January. If you’d like to learn more about the candidates, please join the Four Freedoms Democratic Club and other Manhattan Democratic clubs on Thursday, January 3rd at 6:30 PM for a candidate forum. Then later in 2019, there will be an election for District Leaders.
We have a lot of work ahead of us, but for now, it is time for a few weeks of relaxation before we jump back into the fight. Thank you for all of your support this year; I couldn’t have done it without you.
Have a wonderful holiday season, and a very Happy New Year!
All the best,
